Tour Guides

All our tours are accompanied by experienced, responsible guides and supervisors who are Kiwi experts. We choose our guides carefully to ensure that students are looked after well and have fun on our tours.

In addition to the principal guides, NZdirect International Student Tours also employs tour assistants and student liaison guides.

Tour Guide David Monopoli David Monopoli

David is our tour director and an experienced New Zealand “Kiwi Expert” guide. He is also a director of an international education consultancy and a specialist in youth travel. He has worked in the service industry for most of his life, which has made him aware of visitors’ needs and the importance of value for money. David has led tours in Europe and in New Zealand for a variety of clients and ages and is committed to achieving customer satisfaction and to delivering beyond expectations.
David is a proud Kiwi who loves living in New Zealand and to be part of this interesting multi-cultural and beautiful country. He is looking forward to showing international students what is special and will share many stories of what makes New Zealand unique. His goal is for our team to deliver an experience to make students want to come back for more.
David’s motto: “My aim is for our team to show international students the best of what this country has to offer and to assist them to understand our culture. I love for international students to not just be a tourist but to become part of the community for the time they are with us.”

Tour Guide Christine Hanisch Christine Hanisch

Christine loves working as a tour guide and likes to share her experience and her passion for the outdoors with the students. Her main profession is in international education as a international student coordinator. Her background is in education and she holds a Masters in Education from a German university. Before settling down in sunny Nelson she enjoyed travelling extensively in New Zealand. Christine spends her spare time hiking and exploring the National Parks nearby while taking on new challenges. Students love to share the outdoor activities with Christine.

Tour Guide Elisabeth Schmidt Elisabeth Schmidt

Liz is a real outdoor person! Whenever she has time you can find her doing outdoor activities such as climbing, hiking or horse riding. When she first came to New Zealand in 2009 she travelled throughout the whole of the country and therefore has a lot of insider tips about both Islands. Liz is looking forward to showing you some of the most beautiful places of the country and can’t wait to share her love of New Zealand with you. Liz holds a degree in Social Work and has worked as an early childhood educator and social worker. As well as guiding, she now also works for Study Nelson as an International Education Assistant.

Mareike Ulfers

Mareike is the newest addition to the NZ Direct Tour Team. She started guiding tours in South America and is an experienced traveller herself. This is how Mareike knows what it takes to be a good tour guide and how important it is to create a fun and safe environment for the students. She loves being outdoors and enjoys hiking, climbing and snowboarding in the mountains just as much as sailing or scuba diving in the ocean. She lived for example on a sail boat in the Carribean. To transfer her passion for travelling, exploring beautiful places and experiencing new cultures to the students is her first goal as tour guide. Mareike holds a degree in International Management and Human Resources from a German University and has lived and worked in Germany, the UK, the USA and China. She thinks that New Zealand is an amazing country to travel and live in and is happy to call it her new home. Mareike is looking forward to showing you some of the most beautiful places of the country and can’t wait to share her love of New Zealand with you.
